Pulse Magazine

Art Director, Designer: Gil Martinez, RGD
Illustrators: Gérard Dubois (If leadership...), Megan Halsey (Dorothy Wilie)

Pulse Magazine is the official publication of the Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto. This exciting re-design was a fun and rewarding project. The client requested a book that looked less corporate and appealed to nurses of different ages. These are the results.

Golfstyle is the best fashion magazine for golfers in Canada. These four spreads were part of the Spring 2011 issue. Fashion was shot on location at the new Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida. Equipment was shot in the photographer's studio. The magazine has received much praise. In fact, the Dutch Golf Weekly rated Golfstyle the number 1 source for golf fashion worldwide.

Yankee Magazine Travel Guide to New England travel labels (2004)

Creative Director: Leonard Loria
Art Director/Illustrator/Designer: Gil Martinez
Technique: Vector

The 2004 Yankee Magazine Travel Guide to New England had as its central theme the variety of ethnic foods available in the region. The editors titled it "Around the World in New England", and I created these travel labels to accompany the mention of each exotic restaurant. This made the spreads a bit more interesting, and we did not have to include the photos of good but unnatractive restaurants.

Another spread from Yankee Magazine Travel Guide to New England from 2006. I like how much I am able to say in just two pages.

Yankee Magazine Bed and Breakfast and Inn Directory (2003)

Art Director: Leonard Loria
Designer/Stylist: Gil Martinez
Photo Editor: Heather Marcus

This image is of the very first place I styled, ever. I love the light, the dog, and the sense of possibility inherent in the shot. I can´t remember the name of the photographer or the inn, so if you recognize either the place or the work, please let me know so I can credit him properly.

Yankee Magazine Travel Guide to New England camp story (2006)

Creative Director: Leonard Loria
Designer: Gil Martinez
Photo Editor: Heather Marcus
Photographer: Julie Bidwell

This was one of my most fun assignments for Yankee Magazine, and I love the opener. None of the kids are professional models: they were all vacationing at this camp with their families.

Yankee Magazine Travel Guide to New England (2005)

Creative Director: Leonard Loria

The 2005 Yankee Magazine Travel Guide to New England cover. I like the way I handle type on this cover. Note the amount of zingers, and the manner in which the word "classics" was integrated with the number "70".

The cover and a sample spread of Yankee Magazine Travel Guide to New England for 2004. In addition to art directing the book, I handled much of the illustration and inside maps, like the one shown below.

Yankee Magazine Travel Guide to New England (2003)

Creative Director: Leonard Loria
Art Director/Designer: Gil Martinez
Photo editor: Heather Marcus
Photographers, top to bottom: Kindra Clineff (2), John Carey

This was my first Yankee Magazine Travel Guide to New England, produced in 2002 and printed in 2003. I like each spread for different reasons. The beach shot is just perfect: it says holiday in a very eloquent manner. The baseball spread, with the ball in place of an "O", is a good example of the way in which I contextualize headlines when possible.

Cover prototype, Taste for Life (2000)

Art Director: Gil Martinez

This is the cover proptotype for Taste for Life magazine. Although this particular image was never used, it remains a personal favorite of mine.
