The cat's meow

Art Director, designer: Gil Martinez, RGD
A friend recently left the wonderful Centre for Social Innovation—where I keep my office—for other opportunities. I made this poster to say farewell :)

Babel

Illustrator/Calligrapher: Gil Martinez
Technique:
Watercolour, gold leaf, pen and ink over parchment.

This piece, now in a private collection, displays each of the genesis verses dealing with the myth of the tower of Babel in a different language. The piece takes cues from medieval architecture rendering in manuscripts, and calligraphic faces were selected to complement each individual language.

Emerald Awards at the Ministry of the Environment

These logo tries for the Ontario Ministry of the Environment were a lot of fun to work on. The final choice made for some fun diplomas!

Manual Básico de caligrafía e iluminación (1996)

Author/Designer/Illustrator: Gil Martinez

My undergrad thesis, on type and calligraphy, was a project begun in 1994 and completed in 1996. The work is an excellent primer on the handwritten letterform, and its relationship to printed type. It was published by Universidad Iberoamericana, my alma mater, and it can be purchased from their website. It won a Merit mention in How Magazine's International Design Competitio in 1997.
