The cat's meow

Art Director, designer: Gil Martinez, RGD
A friend recently left the wonderful Centre for Social Innovation—where I keep my office—for other opportunities. I made this poster to say farewell :)

This is part of a personal project—a series of CD-sized images each dealing with a specific genre of Mexican music. This one deals with "NarcoCorridos", a type of folk song that is based on people and events surrounding the drug trade in the US-Mexico border.

Travel Labels, redux

Designer: Gil Martinez, RGD
A few years ago I made some labels for Yankee Magazine. I have recently retaken the project, and have been busy giving the labels a more weathered look. I am doing some new ones, too. Updates to follow...

Family Tree (1998)

Designer/Illustrator: Gil Martinez
Technique: Photocollage

This family tree was created using Adobe Photoshop and incorporates old photographs, family heirloom jewelry, and fabric remnants from old family furniture, all scanned on a conventional desktop scanner.

Here´s what my coleagues have to say about me:

The launch of TechSoup Canada would not have been the same without Gil's creative leadership. He transformed a rough idea--of showcasing the historical time-line of TechSoup Global during the launch of TechSoup Canada--into an exhibition.
The result of Gil's vision was a series of extraordinary, hand-crafted, perfectly displayed--posters.
All of the key stakeholders who attended the launch celebration were delighted by the exhibition, and we have plans to display Gil's art permanently at the TechSoup Global headquarters in San Francisco.
Donnie Claudinho, Marketing Manager, TechSoup Canada

Gil is an experienced, talented, and detail-oriented art director and book designer.
Omegar Martinez, Translations Coordinator, Fondo de Cultura Económica

Gil Martinez was not only a creative and resourceful art director, he also brought wonderful enthusiasm and energy into the entire editorial group. He was probably one of the most liked colleagues by his peers I have known in my nearly 30 years at Yankee.
Mel Allen, Editor-in-chief, Yankee Magazine

Working with Gil was one of the best parts of the job. He is talented and creative, eager to tackle new challenges, and was always willing to take on additional work, even when it went beyond his job description. Even better, his broad education and life experience made him a knowledgeable resource on editorial matters. A true team player.
Amy Traverso, Food editor, Yankee Magazine

Gil is an innovative Art Director, with special strengths in Type Design and Direction of Photography with a modernist flair. He directs others well, and works to build a team that can create beautiful publications on a tight deadline -- and keep the budget in line as well. I have enjoyed working with him very much.
Susan Champeny, Art Director, IDG

Gil is an outstanding designer, has great creativity, and is a pleasure to work with. Good team player.
